It was an exhibition of Scandinavian superiority at Silesia as Jakob Ingebrigstein and Mondo Duplantis both set new World Records at the Diamond League meeting in Poland.
Norway’s Ingebrigstein completed the men’s 3000m in 7:17.55,more than three seconds quicker than Daniel Komen’s 1996 7:20.67 mark.No other men’s athletics individual track world record had stood for longer.
Ingebrigstein won Olympic gold in the 5000m earlier this month. However,he somewhat disappointingly only took home bronze in the 1500m,after being bested by USA’s Cole Hocker and Great Britain’s Josh Kerr.He was imperious here in the 3000m as he usurped Komen as the fastest man over the distance.
Ethiopia’s Paris 2024 5000m silver medalist Berihu Aregawi came second, crossing the line in a new National Record and Personal Best time of 7:21:28.It is also the third fastest time in history, behind Ingebrigstein and Komen.Aregawi’s compatriot Yomif Kejelcha finished third, posting 7:28:44.
Swedish sensation Duplantis then continued his legendary season, extending his own World Record, which he set just three weeks ago at the Paris Olympics,by a centimetre. The new record is now 6.26m,up from 6.25m in Paris.
This is the third time Duplantis has broken his record this year alone, and the tenth time overall.
Erstwhile world champion Sam Kendricks of the USA,who won Olympic silver behind Duplantis in Paris, was second, jumping over 6.00m,after an unsuccessful attempt to do 6.08m.
The continuity didn’t stop there,as Greece’s Paris 2024 bronze medalist Emmanouil Karalis finished third here too.He scaled 6.00m as well, but it took him an attempt more than Kendricks.
