The internet is a worldwide network of computers called the World Wide Web. On the internet information is shared and accessed instantly. This is a massive library that you can find and read about almost anything you can think of. Ranging from business, education right to funny videos for entertainment. Like never before has the need of internet become more than just a liability. It is a necessity in this day and age.

History of the Internet

History has it that the internet started as early as the 1960’s. Formerly known as Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET).The Research done by the American government. before  computers were very large and immobile. At the time, computers were expensive machines,  very large, used only by military scientists and university staff. Computers used a Convectional portal system with magnetic tapes to communicate. Hence the need for a  faster communication system led to the birth of the internet in 1983. Which was a result of an improvement in the transfer protocol. The Cold War was at its height and huge tensions existed between North America and the Soviet Union

How to access the internet now that u know what it is. there are a few requirements;

• a device like a smart-phone or a computer.
• a secure internet connection.
• a web browser.

Take an example of a fisherman, you need a boat and a net to fish.

 In this case the internet connection being the lake. Your device being the net and finally the web browser being the boat. Think of the internet connection as a waterbody connecting your device to the different (landing-sites) networks of computers. Your web browser acts like a boat, allowing you to sail this waterbody and explore different landing-sites. Which are like individual websites on the internet.

The internet is used for several things, it exposes you to various opportunities and possibilities. There’s almost no limit to what you can do online. The Internet makes it possible to quickly find information,

 Communication with people around the world using the internet. From video call platforms to social media outlets, friends and family can connect more easily than ever before. For people who are not physically located near their community or have family members in other countries. The internet bridges the gap of connection.

 Some more activities  you can do on the internet include, managing your finances, shopping from home, streaming music and watching videos. The digital world is a gateway to exploration and enjoyment for those that do not enjoy leaving the house. 

Benefits of the internet

The internet today is used for education. From here one can learn and attain skill in  unlimited fields. During the pandemic, the lockdown proved how essential internet access is for all students. After which an overwhelming majority of teachers , principals , and administrators  increased use of digital learning tools. eg zoom. The internet is essential for finding new employment opportunities, writing resumes, and submitting applications. 

While the benefits of the internet and technology are endless. Having access to them is still a challenge for millions of Ugandans. We have to build an accessible and inclusive internet that improves the lives of all people. Regardless of their age, location, or cultural origin.
